sleeping beauty
a lioness was laying on a rock when we started our evening game drive. as she was sound asleep, we drove of. when we came back some hours later, the lioness was still in the same position and we almost believed her dead. in this moment the lioness opened her eyes. it was not the piercing and sometimes akward lion's stare that seems to uncover your soul's secret. those eyes seemed to say - i have always been here, i know this environment and i’m aware of everything that’s happening around me, even when I seem to sleep. converting to black and white picture underlines the feeling of eternity.
die löwin lag bereits auf dem felsen, als wir unsere abendsafari begannen. sie war in einen tiefen schlaf versunken und wir fuhren weiter auf der suche nach anderen motiven. als wir einige Stunden später zurückkamen, lag sie immer noch an der selben stelle und man hätte sie für tot halten können. plötzlich öffnete sie ihre augen. es war nicht der durchdringende manchmal fast unangenehm stechende blick, mit dem löwen ihrem gegenüber in die seele zu schauen scheinen. dieser dlick scheint vielmehr zu sagen - ich gehöre hierher, das ist mein reich und auch wenn ich zu schlafen scheine, nehme ich alles um mich herum wahr. in schwarz-weiss verstärkt sich der ausdruck von unvergänglichkeit.

zebras on golden grass
leaving the serengeti national parc, a big group of zebras - a part of migration - was standing close to the gravel road near naabi hill gate. the picture is intentionally overexposed. the zebra's black stripes give a great contrast to the golden grass. their pattern is a beautiful graphical design that works even better in black and white. zebras are not easy to photograph as they often have their heads down for grazing. moments before the picture, a hyena was hunting a young thomson gazelle and so the zebras were still on alert - all heads up.
als wir den serengeti nationalpark bereits fast verlassen hatten, bemerkten wir eine grosse gruppe zebras - ein teil der grossen tierwanderung - in der nähe der schotterstrasse. das bild ist absichtlich überbelichtet, um den fokus auf das graphische muster des zebrafells zu richten. zebras nicht einfach zu fotografieren, da sie ihre köpfe oft zum fressen gesenkt halten. nur sekunden bevor das bild entstand, jagte eine hyäne eine kleine thomson gazelle. die zebras waren deshalb noch immer aufgeschreckt und aufmerksam - alle hielten ihr köpfe oben und die gelegenheit für dieses Bild entstand.

following the matriarch
the tarangire national parc is well known for its big herds of elephants. in the heat of the day they come to quench their thirst at the tarangire river. we came across this group when they were crossing the so called little serengeti. they were actually part of a bigger group. even in a big herd it is possible to distinguish the different families as they stick a little closer together. the elephants were marching in our direction, but it is always difficult to know the moment when they will turn into another direction to avoid confrontation. they eventually will walk in a row and in this picture we wanted to show the leading role of the matriarch - walking in line would have destroyed this effect.
der tarangire national park ist bekannt für seine gossen elefantenherden. in der brütenden hitze marschieren sie zum tarangire river, um dort ihren durst zu stillen. wir trafen diese kleine familie als sie die ebene der sogenannten kleinen serengeti überquerten. sie waren teil einer grösseren gruppe. auch in einer grossen herde kann man die einzelnen kleinen familienverbände unterscheiden, da sie immer nahe beieinander bleiben und eine kleine lücke zur nächsten familie entsteht. die elefanten kamen auf uns zu, aber es ist immer schwierig abzuschätzen, wann sie abdrehen, um dem hindernis aus dem weg zu gehen. oft gehen sie dann in einer reihe. das hätte die wirkung des bildes zerstört. damit wollten wir die führungsrolle der matriarchin und die staffelung der familienmitglieder zeigen.

cheetah on the plain
in the middle of the serengeti between the ngare nanyuki and barafu kopjes we met this cheetah. he was laying in the shadow of a small bush. as the sun was rising the shadow shrank more and more. yawning and showing all of his white and impressionating teeth he slowly got up and walked to this dead tree. the cheetah standing on the tree searching for prey in combination with the vast plains in the background is africa at its best.
in der mittleren serengeti zwischen ngare nanyuki und den barafu kopjes fanden wir diesen geparden. er lag im schatten eines kleinen busches. die sonne stieg immer mehr und der schatten wurde immer kürzer. der gepard gähnte und zeigte uns seine beeindruckenden weissen zähne. er erhob sich und lief zu diesem abgestorbenen baum. der nach beute ausschau haltende gepard und die weiten ebenen im hintergrund zeigen eine der schönsten seiten der serengeti.

elephant bull
the serengeti is not only vast and dry grassland. in between there are iles of lush green grass. anywhere where the water gets the chance to concentrate oasis appear in the wide and arid plains. these places attract animals from distance. this formidable elephant bull was moving in our direction - crossing the high grass with big and weaving steps. it's amazing that these big animals move so silently and fast. in short distance to our car he stopped and started posing. his huge head and his impressionating tusks were intimidating. he curled his trunk around his tusk. Somehow this pose adds a playful and elegant note contrasting the sheer power. we backed down to show our respect and gave him enough space to get to the water.
in der serengeti tauchen zwischen den weiten ausgetrockneten ebenen immer wieder grüne inseln auf. dort, wo wasser sich sammelt, entstehen wahrhaft saftig grüne oasen, die tiere von weit her anziehen. dieser beeindruckende bulle bewegte sich mit wogendem schritt über die grasflächen auf uns zu. es ist immer wieder erstaunlich, wie schnell und leise sich elefanten fortbewegen. kurz vor unserem wagen machte er halt und posierte. sein mächtiger kopf und seine grossen stosszähne wirken einschüchternd, während der um den stosszahn geschlungene rüssel dem bullen etwas spielerisches und elegantes verleiht. respektvolll zogen wir uns zurück und machten ihm den weg zum wasser grossräumig frei.

zebra's love
the biggest wildlife parc of europe is located in northern spain - in the region of cantabria. the former iron mine is situated in a breathtaking landscape near the town of santander. the parc gives home to a hundred different species from five continents - among them are some endangered animals like the white rhino and african elephants. the large enclosures are imbedded in natural landscapes with few fences as the environment itself provides natural borders. besides the bigger grevy zebras there are also the common zebras that can be seen in the plains of the serengeti. a zebra folly was born only days before our arrival at the parc. mother and child are standing at the entrance of their shelter turning to each other in big affection.
in nordspanien - genauer gesagt in der region kantabrien - liegt der grösste wildlife park europas. die ehemalige eisenmine in der nähe der stadt santander liegt in einer landschaftlich reizvollen region. im park leben mehr als hundert verschiedene, zum teil bedrohte tierarten aus fünf kontinenten. die gehege sind eingebettet in die vorhandene landschaft, es gibt wenig zäune und abschrankungen, so dass die tiere in einer möglichst naturnahen umgebung leben. neben dem grevyzebra gibt es auch steppenzebras. die steppenzebras hatten erst wenige tage vor unserem besuch nachwuchs bekommen. mutter und kind stehen hier am eingang ihres unterstandes und wenden sich einander liebevoll zu.

lioness warrior
in the fading evening light two lionesses were laying on a small hill observing the environment. one lioness was looking in our direction, the other one in the opposite direction. despite their exposed position on the hill the cats could hardly be seen in the high grass. the lioness fascinated us with her concentrated gaze. you could almost feel how she was scanning the environment for prey.
im abendlicht lagen zwei löwinnen auf einem kleinen hügel und beobachteten die umgebung. eine der löwinnen schaute in unsere richtung, während die andere die andere seite im auge behielt. trotz der erhöhten lage waren die beiden raubkatzen nur schwer im hohen gras zu erkennen. die löwin faszinierte mit ihrem konzentrierten blick. man spürte förmlich, dass sie die umgebung aufmerksam nach beute absuchte.

the watch
from distance this lioness could be seen posing on the termite mount. she seemed to be sleeping, but when we came closer she lifted her head looking at us. the picture seems to tell a story of a lone lioness, but indeed hiding in the tall grass lays a whole pride of lions. when you stay in the bush you get to the point where you feel so much at home that you sometimes forget how well these animals can hide and how dangerous a step out of the car could be. The contrast of the yellow grass and the dark blue sky creates a dramatic mood and reflects the dangerous situation for the gazelles in the background as well as for any other prey - like humans stepping out of the car.
bereits von weitem war die löwin auf dem termitenhügel zu sehen. sie schien gemütlich zu schlafen, hob aber aufmerksam ihren kopf, als wir näher kamen. das bild scheint von einer einsamen löwin zu erzählen. tatsächlich versteckt sich im hohen gras ein ganzes löwenrudel. im hintergrund sind thomson und grantgazellen zu sehen. nach einer gewissen zeit im busch fühlt man sich schnell zuhause und trügerischerweise vergisst man, wie gut diese tiere sich verbergen können und wie gefährlich ein unvorsichtiger schritt aus dem auto sein kann. der kontrast zwischen dem hellen blassgelben gras und dem dunkelblauen bedrohlich wirkenden himmel gibt die unterschwellige anspannung der situation wieder. wie die gazellen im hintergrund sollte auch der mensch sich vor diesen jägern aus dem hinterhalt in acht nehmen.

hartebeest couple
in search of the big five - elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino - some of the animals get less attention despite their obvious beauty. often it's difficult to distinguish the. topi and hartebeest look much the same when you're still unfamiliar with the african savannah. the two hartebeest are standing on a small hill in the middle of the serengeti. the only other thing that can be seen is a single tree. the soft colour of the grass and the pale brown fur of the animals are highlighted by the dark cloudy background. their posture seems to imitate the blades of grass moved by the slight wind. the colours and the ambiance create a harmonic mood and give the impression the picture was painted on canvas.
auf der suche nach den big five - elefant, büffel, leopard, löwe und nashorn - verliert man schnell die schönheit anderer tierarten aus den augen. es ist teilweise schwierig die antilopen auseinander zu halten - die kuhantilopen ähneln den wesentlich dunkleren topiantilopen stark. die beiden hartebeest stehen auf einer kleinen anhöhe inmitten der serengeti. es ist sonst nichts zu sehen als ein einzelner baum am bildrand. die zarten farben des grases und die hellbraune farbe des fells werden durch den dunklen bewölkten himmel betont. ihre haltung scheint die richtung der durch den wind bewegten grashalme nachzuahmen. die farben und die stimmung schaffen ein harmonisches ganzes und geben den eindruck, das bild wäre auf leinwand gemalt.

cheetah fairy tale
this scene is set in the northern serengeti - close to the kenyan border - and shows a cheetah mother with her three cubs. after resting in the shadow of a tree the cheetahs moved on in search of prey. the dead trees, the hills in the background and the dynamic clouds form a perfect stage setting for this family. the ambiance is one of duality - the rich colors of green and blue stand in contrast to the dead trees speaking of evanescence. the prospect of these cubs is unsure - there is a high cub mortality due to predation by other carnivores like hyenas and lions who are competing with the cheetahs for prey. as the cheetah is designed for speed, it is of light weight and stands no chance against the other big cats.
dieses bild aus der nördlichen serengeti - nahe der kenianischen grenze - zeigt eine gepardenmutter mit ihren drei jungen. nachdem sie einige zeit im schatten eines baumes gelegen hatten, begannen die geparden sich auf die suche nach beute zu machen. die kleinen folgten und imitierten ihre mutter und hielten eifrig ausschau. die stimmung ist von kontrasten geprägt - die fröhlichen und intensiven farben des blauen himmels und der grünen büsche stehen den abgestorbenen bäumen, die von vergänglichkeit erzählen, gegenüber. die zukunftsaussichten dieser jungen geparden sind schlecht - es gibt eine hohe sterblichkeit aufgrund der bestehenden konkurrenzsituation um beutetiere mit anderen raubtieren wie hyänen oder löwen. da geparden auf schnelligkeit ausgelegt sind, haben sie einen feinen körperbau. sie sind dadurch die leichtgewichte unter den grosskatzen. einer direkten konfrontation können sie nicht stand halten.

lionking portrait
the previous day we had the chance to witness a confrontation between buffaloes and lions. eventually the lions retreated standing no chance against a mass of buffaloes. the next morning we came back and two of the three lions were still at the same place. one of the two males and the lioness were still mating. as lions mate every twenty minutes it means that they get rather often on their feet compared to a normal lazy lion's day. this circumstance given we had the possibility to get some close-ups and portraits. the lion's expression is calm, his eyes display his energy and wisdom. the long blades of gras frame his head.
am vortag durften wir zeugen einer beeindruckenden konfrontation zwischen büffeln und löwen werden. die drei löwen entschieden sich schliesslich für den rückzug. am nächsten morgen kamen wir wieder zu dieser stelle und fanden zwei der drei am selben platz wieder - eines der männchen und die löwin. wie am tag zuvor waren sie immer noch in paarungs-stimmung und dadurch auch während des tages immer wieder aktiv auf den beinen. dem liebesspiel der löwen ist es zu verdanken, dass wir so die gelegenheit zu nahaufnahmen und einem derartigen porträt bekamen. der löwe strahlt ruhe aus, seine augen sind voller kraft und weisheit. die langen grashalme rahmen sein gesicht.

drinking scenery
a herd of elephants was gathering at the tarangire river in tanzania. standing with our car on a bridge we observed the scene. adult elephants were drinking, calves laying down in the water and playing with each other. beside suckling, elephant calves drink water. young elephants have to learn to coordinate the more than 300 muscles of their trunk before they are able to use it for drinking. until they master this tool, they have to help themselves getting their mouth down to the water level. elephant calves are in so many ways like human children: they are a long time dependent on their mother and live in strong family bonds. they love playing in the water, climbing on and arguing with each other. as researchs have shown elephants are compassionate animals and do mourn their deceased family members for a long time - one more reason to raise awareness on this humanlike species that is heavily endangered by the demand of ivory in asia.
eine elefantenherde versammelte sich am tarangire river. von einer brücke aus konnten wir die szene beobachten. kleine elefanten werden von der mutter gesäugt, müssen aber trotzdem wasser trinken. sie müssen erst lernen, ihren rüssel hierfür zu gebrauchen. der rüssel hat über 300 muskeln, die es zu beherrschen gilt. bis ihnen das gelingt, müssen sie sich ander-weitig behelfen und auf die knie gehen, um den mund zum wasser zu führen, statt das wasser zum mund. elefantenkälber sind menschenkindern sehr ähnlich: sie sind lange von ihrer mutter abhängig und leben in starken familienverbänden. sie lieben es im wasser zu spielen, aufeinander herumzuklettern und einander zu ärgern. wie forschungen zeigen, sind elefanten mitfühlende tiere und trauern lange zeit um verstorbene familienmitglieder. ein grund mehr auf die bedrohliche situation der stetig schwindenden elefantenpopulation aufgrund des elfenbeinhandels hinzuweisen.

zebras embracing
in the distance a big assemblance of zebras was gathering. looking through the telelense these two zebras caught our eye. what seems to be a cordial embrace has also a practical reason. having their heads like that they can observe 360° of their surrounding environment. everytime you come back to the savannah you learn something more about this fascinating wilderness and the way the animals adapt to their environment. reducing the saturation and enhancing the contrast creates a more graphic and abstract version of the situation.
in der ferne sammelte sich eine gruppe zebras. durch das teleobjektiv entdeckten wir diese beiden zebras. was aussieht wie eine herzliche umarmung, hat auch praktische gründe. sie erhalten dadurch einen 360° rundumblick. jedes mal wenn man in die savanne zurückkommt, lernt man mehr über die faszinierende wildnis und die art und weise, wie sich die tiere an ihre umgebung anpassen. um ein abstrakteres und grafischeres bild zu erhalten, wurden die sättigung verringert und die kontraste erhöht.

elephant eternity
in the tarangire national parc the soil is of red-brown colour. after a mud bath elephants get the same warm colour. the posing elephant assimilates to the colours of the surrounding trees. with its slightly crooked position the animal seems to imitate the tree on the right frame of the picture. the elephant's skin has a rich texture. standing there he seems eternal like a stone or a statue.
im tarangire nationalpark hat der boden eine warme rotbraune farbe. nach einem schlammbad erhalten die elefanten denselben farbton. der posierende elefant fügt sich so in die farbgebung seiner umgebung ein. mit seiner leicht schrägen haltung scheint er die neigung des baumes im rechten bildteilnachzuahmen. die struktur der elefantenhaut ist kräftig und gibt dem elefanten einen hauch von der ewigkeit einer statue oder eines felsens.
