the dust
on the way from the town of mto wa mbu to the soda lake of lake natron we travelled on a very bad and rough road. it was a windy day and after a while we saw something brown rolling in our direction. it was no sand devil, but a huge cloud of dust coming to us from the right side - a frightening sight. we were quite nervous, but our driver ensured us that we were in no danger. indeed the massai people we saw while driving by didn't seem to be concerned at all. the cloud was finally crossing our way and we were lost in its brownish colour. the dust was entering the smallest open parts of the vehicle, making it hard to breathe and blocking ou view like some kind of fog. the open plains between lake natron and oldoniyo lengai - the holy mountain of the massai living in this region and an active volcano - are extremely exposed to biting dust storms and the local people are used to these storms.
wir waren auf dem weg von der stadt mto wa mbu zum lake natron. die strasse, auf der wir fuhren, war holprig und staubig. es war ein windiger tag und nach ein oder zwei stunden fahrt sahen wir in der ferne etwas braunes, das sich auf uns zu bewegte. es war keine sandhose, sondern eine riesige staubwolke, die auf uns zurollte - ein beängstigender anblick. unser fahrer versicherte uns, dass es keinen grund zur unruhe gäbe. und tatsächlich, auch die massai, die wir entlang der strasse sahen, verhielten sich entspannt. irgendwann kreuzte die wolke schliesslich unseren weg. wir waren eingeschlossen in dumpf gelb-braunem dämmerlicht. der sand drang durch jede noch so kleine ritze ins wageninnere und machte das atmen schwer. wie im dichten nebel fuhren wir halbblind weiter. die weiten ebenen zwischen lake natron und oldoniyo lengai - dem heiligen berg der dort lebendem massai und einem noch aktiven vulkan - werden oft von sandstürmen heimgesucht und die einheimische bevölkerung ist daran gewöhnt.
